Vigo: Silveiro Rivas (1980-2003)
Born in Ponteareas in 1942. He began his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vigo to Madrid continued. For two years he worked in the studio of sculptor Francis Baron.
In 1979 he moved to Paris, where he opened a studio-workshop and exhibited his work, as well as in Belgium and Holland. In 1970 attends the Pontevedra Biennial. Exhibits for the first time in Galicia in the living Caixavigo. Participate in the sample of "Young Art de Galicia", organized by the Museum of Maside Carlos Sada, A Coruña, performing various experiences throughout the eighties in this laboratory.
His work covers Spain and jumps to England and Germany. Participate in important group exhibitions and in 1990 made one of his greatest works for the Plaza de America in Vigo, example of simplicity of concept and plasticity, carved directly Porrino granite. He is represented in museums throughout Galicia and Spain and in major institutional collections.
Silverio Rivas came to abstraction in his eagerness to pursue the pure form and space. Works either stone, wood and bronze, although this latter material it is best expressed. Razonante conceptual articulated volumes are very suggestive, in sets of curves and angles that adopt different morphologies.Always iconoplasta, geometrical, influenced by Brancusi.
Monument "Atlantic Gateway"
In the middle of the square of America is located on a large circular pool of 38 meters across a large door of Rosa Porrino granite 14 meters high and 427 tons. This great door represents a tribute to America and the Atlantic Ocean.
This book has a great monumentality that leaves the viewer unmoved. Along with the great central door in two volumes under more form the pink granite monument. One on the Gran Via and the other at the beginning of Castelao.
