Vigo: Flora and fauna

Privileged climate

The municipality of Vigo is characterized by a temperate climate, with little frost, moderate temperature changes, high rainfall and some summer drought. We can say that it is a transitional oceanic climate of the Mediterranean. A favorable climate for plants whose growth is not constrained by the climate. Vigo Township presents a variety of microclimates due to the morphology of its territory.

The sea exerts a softening of the climate by reducing the difference between summer and winter temperatures. Northerly winds in the summer dragged warm surface waters, allowing upwelling of nutrient-rich cold water. Due to their low temperature these waters are no clouds and are responsible for the summer drought of the Rias Baixas.

Flora. Vegetation Vigo

The arboreal vegetation of oceanic character of the coastline of Western Europe consists Atlantic species, with their genuine representative oak. Groupings are preserved oak trees in the Guide, San Roque and Quiñones de León. The riverbanks have lush vegetation and fauna that is distinguished by its diversity.

Pine is the most numerous species with eucalyptus. There are three species of pines in the territory Vigo: bravo pine (Pinus pinaster), pine reforestation (Pinus radiata) less dispersed, and much less abundant gentle pine (Pinus pinea).Eucalyptus had an ornamental use in the grounds and gardens of Vigo until after the 40s begin to repopulate the species native to the Australian continent. The same origin as eucalyptus are the acacias.

Besides plant species typical of forest Galicia, Vigo has wide range of areas such as wetlands or vegetation on dunes and beaches and rocky areas.

The city has an inventory of unique trees and natural forested areas around the municipality of Vigo, and frontiers were cataloged and trees spontaneous interest. The inventory lists 226 species and 12 hybrids over the total number of copies amounting to 4259.

Fauna

There are a variety of habitats: wetlands, rivers and riverbanks, woodland, crops and grasslands, and shrublands.

Rivers and reservoirs have a large variety of species such as trout, eel, roach, sunfish, rainbow trout, plaice of river. At sea diversity is even greater as well evidenced by the intense fishing activity.

In Vigo found 11 species of amphibians of the 14 present in Galicia and 25 in Spain. It presents an interesting representation of amphibians, what constitutes it as a place of special interest in the field. It also has 13 species of reptiles, since the charges to the Lizard Buzzard Galician.

There are a number of bird species. These are the main group of fauna indicator of the biological importance of a space. We must distinguish between nesting in Vigo of which appear regularly on their migratory journeys. In the municipality of Vigo 42 species nest. Highlights include the hawk, the hawk and the peregrine falcon or the multitude of seabirds that nest in the Cies Islands.

Vigo found cataloged in the presence of 29 of the 60 mammals that can be found in Galicia. We find: foxes, rabbits, bats, squirrels, American mink, horses.
